This page contains information about the mod version of DayZ. Standalone information is available here.

The CZ550 is the rarest weapon you can find in farm areas. However, it is still the most commonly found sniper rifle in DayZ.

Unlike the other sniper rifles, the CZ550 does not use the mil-dot system for range-finding purposes. Instead, you must calculate the distance of your target from its width, using the vertical lines that are spaced along the horizontal cross-hair of the CZ scope.

A standing player directly facing you when looking through the scope looks like this:

  • Range: 100m - Width: 8 lines at the waist
    • (or 12 lines at shoulders with the chevron tip being 12 from the outer edge)
  • Range: 200m - Width: 6 lines
  • Range: 300m - Width: 4 lines
  • Range: 400m - Width: 3 lines
  • Range: 500m - Width: 2.50 lines (approx.)
  • Range: 600m - Width: 2.00 lines (approx.)
  • Range: 700m - Width: 1.75 lines (approx.)
  • Range: 800m - Width: 1.5 lines (approx.)

1 line = 1 horizontal line = the distance between 2 vertical lines.

    Range = 1200 / Lines (approx)

Estimating the distance to your target comes exponentially harder when moving farther away from it, especially when engaging targets that are over 500 meters away. Only rarely will you be facing a player from a 0 (zero) degree angle. When in doubt, refer to a map and use nearby landmarks to estimate the distance.

I still prefer this baby to a DMR.

It's much easier to obtain, you can find ammo for it almost anywhere, and this gun has zeroing, which is absolutely beautiful.

Still struggling with a mil-dot system on that DMR.

By Delonge on 2012/07/06 at 4:59pm

I'd have to disagree, Mrksjke, I cannot find this gun anywhere. Almost as rare the gun is, the ammo is too.

By NSA on 2012/07/23 at 4:56pm

Well before I found it there was ammo everywhere that I didnt pick up. Since I have it there seems to be almost none. I still love this one though... :)

Ok, I made some rangefinding myself and this is what I found.

First I thought I got almost totally different results than LonelyWolf did, but I noticed our perception of the word "lines" was different. When he says lines he means the number of lines it takes to cover a certain area. When I say lines, I mean how many spaces between the lines it takes to cover the same area. I found his method to be a little clumsy, so I made this for the people that like to use my method.

In short, I took screenshots of a standing player that was facing directly at me. Still, when aiming at a player, expect and try to adapt to a margin of 0.25-0.50 lines (=spaces; depending on distance) when rangefinding, since you might not be facing the player directly from the front like I did (at least this is how I perceive a 0'° angle in ArmA 2).

The results I got (from shoulder to shoulder unless specified otherwise):

Range: 100m ( ) Lines: A player's waist equals to 8 lines on the scope

Range: 200m ( ) Lines: 6

Range: 300m ( ) Lines: 4

Range: 400m ( ) Lines: 3

Range: 500m ( ) Lines: 2.10 - 2.20

Range: 600m ( ) Lines: 1.80 - 2.00

Range: 700m ( ) Lines: 1.50 - 1.75

Range: 800m ( ) Lines: 1.20 - 1.40

When in doubt, which often happens when over 500 meters from your target, refer to a map and use vertical and horizontal distance to visible landmarks to calculate the distance to your target. This is done by using the Pythagorean theorem, see

I have to disagree with you. Ammo isn't really rare, i come across 3-7 mags each day. But yeah the gun itself is... I hardly found 1

@bryntheskits You use zeroing option by PgDown/PgUp. You can see your zeroing option in right top corner of the screen. To set zeroing option well use Rangefinder or Dots on yout sniper rifle scope or if you know how to you can also try to find out distance to the target by watching it's height(If you know how, ofcourse)

By bryntheskits on 2012/07/07 at 7:32am

Still don't know how to zero in this bloody game, but I try and go above or below the target, whatever's needed. One of my first ever kills are shooting some poor guy in the legs (because I didn't know how to zero or the range) and watching him getting eaten by zombies, his mate tried to help but couldn't kill them all, me and my brother had a good laugh at that.

Still a great sniper, besides being common.

By neilcam97 on 2012/08/13 at 3:43am

The ammo and the gun aren't rare at all, I find 2-6 mags a day and I've seen 3 rifles in a week.

By FlyingSloth on 2013/04/17 at 8:04pm

Going from the data above, the formula for ranging is roughly: y = 1200 / x where Range is y and Lines is x.

so instead of having to remember all those values or writing down a table, you can do the quick math to work it out. Same as ranging on mildot sights. I find the formula quicker than memorizing a table of values.

One of my favorite guns to have because it adds to the "surviving" aspect of the game and I love how realisitic it feels. And of course, plenty of ammo.

By LoneWolf on 2013/01/07 at 11:52pm

Hey guys, i have noticed that people are struggling with estimating range to targets with this gun. I managed to develop a pretty accurate ranging method for this guns scope. On the horizontal line of this gun there is vertical lines, I found out that these can actually be used for ranging. You use these lines to measure the length between a players shoulders. Just count the lines from one shoulder to the other and you are able to estimate the range. Here is my result on the shooting range :

200m - 7 lines 300m - 4.5 lines 400m - 4 lines 500m - 3.5 lines 600m - 3 lines 700m - 2.5 lines 800m - 1.5 lines

Note that after 500 meters the ranging becomes more and more inaccurate and that is when I got my first misses on the target with the gun as well. Hope this helps.

For shooting on moving targets:

You can use the vertical lines on the horizontal line of the crosshair to correct your point of aim on moving targets. Formula: distance to target / 2 = on which line to fire on. For example, 500 meters equals 2.5 lines you have to aim ahead of your target. This was tested on the target range mission for arma 2. Got headshots all the way up to 800 meters, which is this guns max range, I think.

I looted two barns today and found one CZ550 with one mag in each. I have uploaded a screenshot of me finding the second one. Great lucks ^^

By Infektard on 2012/12/18 at 7:21pm

I like this one, easy to aim and kill bandits with. NOTE! Loot chance depends on server, on some it's easy, others difficult/impossible. Ammo seems to be easy to find everywhere though.

To bad players dont understand that all servers are different, since 90% of live servers are in fact "private hives", and the rest are sharing the database through hired hives. The dropchance showed on DayZDB are (hopefully) based on what people find, so don't trust the numbers to be accurate all of the time.

By NomNomMeatball on 2012/11/30 at 2:05am

I've found 2 of these in my whole DayZ career. It has around the same damage as other snipers, and it's not that bad of a gun. Take it if found.

By WobMinerJames on 2012/11/24 at 12:30pm

I have played this game before any extra maps came out. This gu-- SNIP -- I made a speech on how rare this gun was. Joined a Chernarus map right after this and found one in a barn within 5 minutes.

Details - Zeroing is great, accurate and a very nice weapon as a whole, killed 2 bambies spamming on side chat with their mic's without much issues. Gun handles very nicely.

This is one of the only guns I still haven't found. I can find the ammo though.

By iZallen on 2012/10/05 at 2:28pm

Considering this weapon is much easier to find than a DMR or an M14, I consider it a very good gun if you require a sniping weapon.

By Haythz on 2012/08/02 at 6:35pm

yeah but how can i range find with the vertical lines? its that possible?i think itll be more accurate

By Haythz on 2012/08/01 at 8:10pm

Does anyone know how to range find with this scope??

By CrazyDemonrik07 on 2012/07/31 at 2:31pm

I myself have only encountered one snipe, this one, overall and then the game glitched after I put my ghillie suit on and my primary disappeared. I had no ammo for it at the time. Then a few minutes after losing it I found Ammo. Would have been my first time using one too.

By Alimentas on 2012/07/26 at 12:17am

I once found 3 in one farm building (only one had ammo though). Funny thing is that I had one already in my hands when I was entering it :D So far I've found like 6 or 7 of them, it isn't really rare but isn't common as well. And mags are pretty hard to find sometimes.

Totally agree to Delonge.

7999 dmg/per hit

By ElAMJAM on 2012/07/10 at 8:21am

Pretty good sniper I just found it in NW Berezino at the farm and the ammo seems pretty common

By Mrksjke on 2012/07/06 at 11:32pm

Well, I found it twice in the barns yesterday (once on a player's corpse inside a barn, I don't know if you count it as found in the barn), and I had like 6 stacks of ammo for it in my backpack by that moment.

I felt like a lucky guy, because yeah, I couldn't find it the other day despite I checked almost every barn on my way.

By ArcherEON on 2013/03/15 at 8:16am

I totally disagree with Mrksjke, not only is this gun overall poor in comparison to the DMR. It has no effective ranging/aiming system except the horizontal hash lines which are very difficult to use at distance. The mildots are vastly superior. And its really not that much harded to find than the DMR. That is if you look in the right places. The ammo is hard to find on both weapons but loot spawn is on the server's side so that is beside the point. If I had the choice to choose a sniper between DMR and Cz550, I would choose DMR all the way.

By JacksonAces on 2012/08/02 at 7:43am

If you want to estimate range with the CZ, the chevron in the center is about 1.5 mildots tall. Not as precise as real mildots, but it will get you close enough to zero correctly.

By Complex on 2012/07/30 at 11:59pm

I don't know why people hate this little guy, so what if it doesn't have the mil-dots? It's really not all that hard to guestimate. Besides, I only use it to clear the 3-4 ZedHeads that spawn at barns and such from 600m+ anyways.

By Shadowsgleam on 2012/07/11 at 4:20am

I was reading about the DMR and the MilDot sight is supposedly sighted in for 300 meters in the center, then each dot above that is 100 meters further reaching up to 800 meters effectively.

Hope this helps.
